Rejection is redirection

It’s a tough job market out there

And summer slowdowns are coming.

Postings, interviews, and offers will take longer.

Because hiring managers and decision-makers are taking time off.

Here's what you can do now:

  • Get clear on your career direction

  • Polish your resume

  • Optimize your LinkedIn profile

  • Network like nobody's business

  • Stay accountable (find an accountability partner if needed!)

As my colleague said recently,

Rejection is redirection.

NON-BEDSIDE JOB SPOTLIGHT

Clinical Research Nursing

Working in an academic teaching hospital in clinical research was a non-bedside job I had earlier in my career. I was one of two nurses in the study, among eight research assistants.

The study was focused on uncovering the causes of asthma, allergies and eczema in children. I got to complete assessments on infants, children and adults.

“I loved the way I was able to use my transferable skills, calming infants and their parents for lung function and allergy tests, taking blood samples, and talking to them about how they felt about parenthood (the last one was not ‘officially’ part of the job, but you know nurses).”

At the time, it was a groundbreaking study, and I enjoyed feeling like I was contributing to valuable research findings that were going to help improve others’ quality of life.

I learned so much about factors that can affect the development of allergies, and on a personal note the things that worried new parents (and what brands of baby gear to buy when I became a new mom).

Here’s what I think helped me get the job:

  • Having clinical expertise in maternal child health

  • Focusing on skills I already had such as physical assessments (even though I’d never worked with infants older than a few days old)

  • Talking about my personal connection to the study since I also suffer from asthma, allergies and eczema

  • Being open to a one-year contract since the study was reliant on funding for the position
